UNB Salvages Split
(CHARLOTTETOWN, PE) The UNB REDS women’s hockey team needed a shootout to salvage a weekend split of Atlantic University Sport road games at STFX and UPEI.
On Saturday, following a 4-1 loss in Antigonish on Friday, Olivia Eustace (Riverview, NB) and Katelyn Scott (Almonte, ON) scored shootout goals and Hannah LeClair (Norboro, PE) made two saves to lift the REDS to a 3-2 win over the UPEI Panthers.
In regulation, Scott scored twice for UNB, a power-play goal in the first period and an unassisted marker in the second.
LeClair made 26 saves on 28 shots in regulation and overtime to earn the win while Erin Cabaday (Oakville, ON) stopped 24 of 26 shots in the Panthers net before surrendering both shootout goals.
Chloe McCabe (Charlottetown, PE) and Jenna Mercer (Bay Roberts, NL) scored in regulation for UPEI.
On Friday, Josie Chisholm (Antigonish, NS) scored UNB’s lone goal in her return to STFX, just 21 seconds into the second period. The former X-Woman’s goal tied the game 1-1, but the home team scored late in the second and twice in the third to earn the win.
Cassie McCallum (Rothesay, NB) made 27 saves on 31 shots on the UNB net. Bianca Zak (Stonewall, MB) made 17 saves in the X net.
Ireland McCloskey (Barrie, ON), Megan Smith (Antigonish, NS), Kamdyn Switzer (Stittsville, ON), and Kameryn Lahey (Catalone, NS) scored for the home team.
With the split, the REDS are now 17-4-1-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL), good for second place in the AUS standings, two points back of the X-Women. UNB has clinched a post-season berth.
The REDS will visit the St. Thomas Tommies on Friday night. Game time is 7:00pm, at Fredericton’s Grand-Harvey Centre.
UNB returns to home ice on Saturday afternoon when they host Moncton. Game time is 3:00pm.
