Send A Kid To Camp Returns
(FREDERICTON, NB) With UNB’s summer sport programming season almost upon us, the REDS are happy to announce that our ‘Send A Kid To Camp’ program will return for its second summer.
In 2024, the program will provide six scholarships for our July camps and five more in August.
“This is amazing,” said REDS Athletic Director Jeff Speedy. “Our fans and supporters really came through for us with donations and support in our merchandise sales. It shows just how great they really are. They don’t just come and cheer on our teams, they get behind the community efforts we’re engaged in. This means a lot to a lot of people.”
In July, six kids who might not otherwise be able to attend, will participate in girls and boys basketball camps, soccer camps, and volleyball camps.
“Not everyone can afford to send their kid to a week-long sport camp,” acknowledged Speedy. “This program gives kids an opportunity to be part of something that can be transformative.”
Spearheaded by the REDS’ women’s basketball team, money was raised through the sale of team gear and online donations.
Individuals chosen to participate in the summer sport camps applied for the funding.
“If you’ve seen the faces of some of the kids who’ve come through our summer sport camp programs, you know how much fun they have,” said Abby Sensabaugh, REDS Youth Program Coordinator. “They also learn about teamwork and leadership, skills they’ll use off the court or off the field too.”

“We’re still accepting applications for this summer’s programming,” said Sensabaugh. “So if someone knows of a kid who might benefit from this, we’d like them to recommend that they apply. We want to help them.”
In addition to supporter donations, members of the REDS women’s basketball team will be selling REDS gear at the Jr. REDS’ “Schools Out Shootout” girls basketball tournament. That takes place June 7th through 9th, at UNB’s Richard J. Currie Center.
In 2023, 11 individuals were able to attend a REDS summer sport camp free of charge. In 2024, the program is on track to give more.
