REDS Add Maschmeyer As Associate Coach
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS have hired two-time Atlantic University Sport Most Sportsmanlike Player Taylor Maschmeyer as full-time associate coach of their women’s hockey team.
“Taylor’s extensive experience both as a player in the AUS and as a dedicated coach at various levels truly sets her apart,” said REDS’ head coach Sarah Hilworth. “Her achievements, including two AUS championships, coaching successes at Oromocto High School and with Hockey New Brunswick demonstrate her deep understanding of the game and her ability to cultivate talent.”
As a player, Maschmeyer, then Taylor Dale, helped the STFX X-Women to AUS titles in 2013 and 2015, a bronze medal at the 2013 U SPORTS championship tournament, was named to the AUS All-Rookie team in 2013, and earned the league’s Most Sportsmanlike Player award in 2015 and 2016. She captained the X-Women during her final two seasons.
As a coach, the Oromocto native has fashioned an impressive resume while leading the girls’ program at Oromocto High School, the 2024 Hornets of Champions Hockey, and Hockey New Brunswick’s 2023 U16 team, and serving as an assistant with various teams including HNB’s 2023 U18 Canada Games team.
“I consider myself extremely fortunate to be joining a winning and respected REDS program,” said Maschmeyer. “To be able to contribute to the already growing legacy this program has is very exciting. I grew up watching the REDS men play and to be able to be a part of history with this group of coaches and student-athletes is something I do not take for granted.”
Maschmeyer has undertaken significant coaching training, earning certification in numerous areas, including high performance, safe sport, respect in sport, managing conflict, and ethical decisions.
“I’m sure there were many qualified candidates for this position, but I feel that my experience, not only as a coach but as a student-athlete, set me apart from others,” she said. “It allows me to be relatable and have an understanding and respect for what these student-athletes do. I know what it takes to win AUS championships and medal at national championships. I know the grind of balancing school, hockey and life away from home. I also pride myself on my hockey knowledge and creating an approachable coaching style that, hopefully, creates a great line of communication.”
Hilworth expects Maschmeyer to have an immediate impact as someone who can help continue to build the REDS culture of excellence and development.
“Her passion for coaching and proven track record in improving teams aligns perfectly with our goals of fostering both athletic and personal growth in our student-athletes,” said Hilworth. “Taylor's commitment to building strong relationships and her first-hand understanding of the student-athlete experience will enhance our team's cohesion and performance on and off the ice.”
As for trading sides in the heated UNB-STFX rivalry, Maschmeyer is excited.
“UNB was not an option for me when choosing schools as they only had the men’s program at that time,” she said. “X will always be a part of who I am, and I am forever grateful for the years I had there. To trade in my colors for the red, white and black is something I am honored to do. I understand the rivalry all too well as my husband played for STFX during the years I was there too. I’ll have to work on him to at the very least put away his pride and sport a REDS cap on game days.”
“I grew up going to the UNB camps surrounded by boys and feel fortunate to be part of growing the female side of the REDS program,” she added. “I’m excited to start my journey with the REDS and the entire community that supports us.”
