Scott Leads REDS In Shoot-out Win
(FREDERICTON, NB) Reigning Atlantic University Sport female Athlete of the Week Katelyn Scott (Almonte, ON) had the shoot-out winner, one of her four points in UNB's 4-3 triumph over the STFX X-Women on Friday in AUS women's hockey at UNB's Aitken Centre.
Scott's game-winner followed two-goals and an assist in regulation.
"We let off there for a bit, so to come back from that and finish hard and win that, it's a good time," said Scott, named Tim Horton's Player of the Game.
The scoring started at 5:59 of the first period when Mackenzie Keenan (Midhurst, ON) scored from just outside the STFX crease putting the REDS up 1-0.
Scott made it 2-0 about six minutes later.
UNB goalie Cassie McCallum (Rothesay, NB) made 27 straight saves to start the game, with an impressive collection that kept the REDS on top despite being out-shot 18-5 in the second period. She would finish the contest with 37 saves.
A wrist shot from just inside the blue line by STFX's Terryn Mozes (Kanata, ON) broke McCallum's save streak with less than a minute to go in the second.
During a 5-on-3 advantage early in the third period, Scott found the back of the net for the second time, putting the home team up 3-1.
"I like to take all the space I can get, so whenever they give me that, I take what I can and get the shot off as soon as the time comes," said Scott.
The X-Women wouldn't go away though.
Landyn Pitts (Antigonish, NS) and Mackenzie Lothian (Alliston, ON) both scored to tie the game 3-3 and send it to overtime.
UNB dominated possession in overtime, but ultimately couldn't score.
The REDS were perfect in the shoot-out.
McCallum stopped two X-Women attempts while Olivia Eustace (Riverview, NB) and Scott both scored on their tries. Scott's goal was her 11th point of the season, most in U SPORTS.
"That is my go to move," she said. "Cass told me that you've got to get her to bite and then go up top, so I listened."
UNB has now won three straight, improving to 4-1-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL), tied with Dalhousie for first place in the AUS standings
The X-Women are now 2-1-0-2.
The REDS can extend their winning streak to four games on Saturday as they host Mount Allison. Face-off is at 7:00pm.
STFX take on UdeM at 7:00pm, in Moncton.
