REDS Fall To Huskies
(HALIFAX, NS) The Saint Mary's Huskies scored a 6-2 win over the UNB REDS in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action, Saturday, in Halifax.
The Huskies got off to a strong start, recording the first six shots on goal, but were unable to beat veteran REDS goaltender Cassie McCallum (Rothesay, NB). Mid-way through the first period, the Huskies got a powerplay opportunity and took advantage, with Jillian Duggan (Halifax, NS) beating McCallum, 11:47 in.
The REDS drew even in the dying moments of the first, with forward Katelyn Scott (Almonte, ON) skating down the right wing and attempting a centering pass that went off a defender's stick and past Huskies goaltender Ridleigh Hansen (Red Deer, AB), tying the game at 1-1 with just six seconds remaining in the period.
Four minutes into the second, the Huskies restored their lead. Avery Cant (Waterloo, ON) skated down the right wing and patiently played a pass around a sliding defender onto the stick of Duggan, who scored her second goal of the day to put the Huskies ahead 2-1.
The REDS were motivated to equalize, firing a barrage of shots towards the Huskies goal, but Hansen was sharp, making 15 saves in the period.
The visitors were able to equalize on a powerplay, after Hansen made a great initial save on forward Hillary Wood (Miramichi, NB), the rebound found its way to Scott who fired a wicked shot over Hansen's glove to tie it 2-2, 12:35 into the second period.
Saint Mary's took another penalty and the REDS were threatening, but a determined forecheck from forwards Mackenzie Beggs (Kemptville, ON) and Erin Denny (Eskasoni, NS) paid off with Beggs scoring a short-handed goal to put the Huskies ahead 3-2.
The Huskies added three more in the third period, skating away with the 6-2 decision.
Hansen made 30 saves for the win, while McCallum turned away 18 shots in defeat.
The Huskies win improves their record to 1-0-1 (W-L-T) on the season. They're back on home ice on Friday, hosting Mount Allison. Game time is 7:00pm.
UNB falls to 1-1-0. They'll return to Fredericton to host the St. Thomas Tommies, in the REDS home opener, Friday. Game time is 7:00pm.
