REDS Win At Dal
(HALIFAX, NS) Two first-period goals were enough to lift the UNB REDS over the Dalhousie Tigers in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action on Friday night, in Halifax.
The home team had a strong start.
Early on, Dal's Jill Imeson (Perth, NL) had a breakaway opportunity, but REDS' goalie Cassie McCallum (Rothesay, NB) made a great save.
The momentum quickly shifted in the REDS favour. Eight minutes into the game, Jorja Nystrom (Leduc, AB) scored off a rebound from Madelyn Pears (Ottawa, ON).
Nystrom's goal would go on to be the game winner for UNB.
Dalhousie struggled to get anything going offensively in the first period and the REDS were quickly increasing pressure.
Twelve minutes in, Melanie Drost (Nepean, ON) scored on a beautiful tip to double UNB's lead. UNB would end the period outshooting the Tigers 13-2.
The REDS were able to build on their momentum in the second period. But Tigers' goalie Grace Beer (Oakville, ON) stood on her head, stopping 20 shots through 40 minutes of play.
The Tigers came out of the second intermission and were able to pressure the REDS, spending much more time in the offensive zone than the previous periods.
UNB gave a helping hand, going to the box three times in the third period, but the Tigers were not able to find the back of the net and the game ended in a 2-0 REDS victory.
McCallum earned her first shut-out of the season, turning away all nine of the Tigers shots. Dal's Beer stopped 33 shots.
Nystrom was named Player of the Game.
The Tigers return to home ice on Saturday night, looking to rebound against Moncton.
The REDS continue their Halifax swing on Saturday when they visit the Saint Mary's Huskies. Game time is 3:00pm.
