(ANTIGONISH, NS) The UNB REDS gave up four first period goals and couldn't recover, losing 6-2 to the STFX X-Women in Atlantic University Sport women's hockey action, Saturday night, in Antigonish.

STFX forward Anna MacCara (Yellowknife, NT) had a three-point night and took home player of the game honours.

MacCara opened the scoring about nine minutes in, picking up a long pass from Ireland McCloskey (Barrie, ON), skating in on a breakaway, and backhanding one into the net.

About four minutes later, Landyn Pitts (Antigonish, NS) made it a two goal game, tipping in a point shot past Kendra Woodland (Kamloops, BC) in the UNB net.

Terryn Mozes (Kanata, ON) added another 19 seconds later, and the X-Women made it a four goal period with about 90 seconds to play when Vivian Hinch (Vancouver, BC) found the top corner on the powerplay.

The X-Women's powerplay continued to provide dividends in the second period, with Pitts scoring again.

UNB got on the board with about five minutes left in the second period, with Rylee Strohm (Kingsville, ON) deflecting home a pass from Lillian George (Nipissing First Nation) while on the powerplay.

The REDS tried to keep the momentum going, and Melanie Drost (Nepean, ON) got a stick on the puck following a scramble in front of the X net with 10 seconds left in the stanza.

Maggy Burbidge (Falmouth, NS) gave the X-Women a four-goal lead with about five minutes gone in the third period, corralling the puck along the near boards, and circling to the slot before firing a slapshot from the faceoff circle.

STFX's Amaya Giraudier (Assiniboia, SK) made 31 saves for the win, while Woodland had 37 saves in the loss.

The X-Women continue their home stand on Sunday with a 3:00pm matchup against the Dalhousie Tigers.

UNB next plays on Wednesday, at 7:00pm, when they host Moncton.
