REDS Blank Mounties
(SACKVILLE, NB) Frederike Cyr (Candiac, QC) scored twice to lead the UNB REDS in a 3-0 win over the Mount Allison Mounties on Wednesday, in an Atlantic University Sport women’s hockey game that was originally scheduled for January 14th, but postponed.
“I thought our team played a solid game tonight, especially being down a couple of players,” said Cyr, who also had an assist and was named Subway Player of the Game. “I thought we adapted very well and it was an overall great team effort.”
In what was Mount Allison’s final home game of the season, both teams came out physical in the opening frame trying to set the tone.
UNB would have three opportunities on the power-play to Mount Allison’s one, but neither team could capitalize.
The REDS would lean on their leaders in the second period, jumping out to the game’s first lead as Paige Grenier (Olds, AB) tipped a pass from Cyr on a two-on-one break. Cyr would make it 2-0 for UNB a few moments later, picking the top corner.
Despite not registering a goal in the second, the Mounties executed their gameplan and spent some quality minutes in the offensive zone. Shots after 40 minutes favoured UNB 31-11.
Mount Allison would find it difficult to stay out of the penalty box for much of the third period. UNB would eventually make them pay, at the 12:48 mark, when Payton Hargreaves’ (Whitby, ON) slick backhand pass to Cyr in the slot found the back of the net. With her second goal and third point, Cyr moves into the top ten in AUS scoring.
“Mount Allison’s goaltender had a great game,” said Cyr. “She was able to make some key saves tonight which made for a bit of a challenge for us, especially in the first period. In the second and third, we were able to bare down on scoring opportunities and all three goals were products of a collective effort.”
UNB’s Cassie McCallum (Rothesay, NB) make saves on all 19 shots she faced to earn her third shutout of the season. Kaitlyn Evelyn (Courtice, ON) turned aside 40 of the 43 shots she faced.
“I thought we did a great job on creating opportunities and executed on some points we’ve been working on the past few weeks,” said REDS’ head coach Sarah Hilworth. “It was awesome to see the team supporting one another, and Cassie’s performance really held us in there at times. She was confident and was able to give us momentum with big saves. I was impressed with how she managed the game tonight.”
The Mounties, now 2-22-1-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL) will travel to Antigonish on Friday to take on STFX. That same night, the REDS will visit UPEI. Both games are scheduled for 7:00pm starts.
“I believe this win will give us some momentum going into our game on Friday,” said Cyr.
