Reds Women To Face Team Germany
Part of lead-up to 2020 IIHF World Women's Championship
(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB Reds women’s hockey team will face Germany’s national women’s team, March 25th, in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, as part of a pre-tournament schedule ahead of the 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship, taking place in Halifax and Truro.
The Reds will take on the Germans at the Pictou County Lifestyle Centre, in New Glasgow.
“We’re excited that such an important event is coming to Atlantic Canada, and that our group will be involved,” said Reds head coach Sarah Hilworth. “To be involved with the pre-tournament competition is a fantastic opportunity for our student-athletes to compete against other high-performance athletes.”
Seven Nova Scotia communities will play host to nine competing teams and five women’s U SPORTS teams for 10 pre-tournament games between March 25th and 29th, before the puck officially drops March 31st on the women’s worlds.
“The pre-tournament schedule is yet another milestone as we continue to prepare to welcome the world to Nova Scotia in March, and to work with a number of communities throughout Nova Scotia to allow hockey fans in the region an opportunity to experience the 2020 IIHF Women’s World Championship,” said Grant MacDonald, general manager of the event. “We look forward to providing a world-class experience for fans and teams in all seven pre-tournament communities.”
UNB joins the St FX X-Women, the Saint Mary’s Huskies, the St. Thomas Tommies, and the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues as the U SPORTS teams participating.
“I think the more opportunity for our players to use hockey as a tool, for not just education and the game itself, but to meet other people and experience their cultures is important in their growth as people,” said Hilworth. “Some of the most fun I had as a student-athlete were games we played against Team Japan and Team China, so the memories that our student-athletes will make playing Team Germany will be stories that they will share well past their time in the game.”
“It’s an incredible honour for our women’s team to be included in this pre-competition schedule,” said John Richard, UNB’s Athletic Director. “Sarah and the group have grown so much over the past two seasons, and this is a chance to measure that growth against some of the best players in the world.”
