(SACKVILLE, NB) The UNB Reds made a little history on Saturday night, recording the first win in UNB's new era of women's hockey.

Ashley Stratton (Mount Pearl, NL) and Julia Spitzig (Kitchener, ON) scored goals to lead the Reds in a 2-0 victory over the Mount Allison Mounties.

Kendra Woodland (Kamloops, BC) made 20 saves for the shut-out.

"The first win feels absolutely incredible," said Woodland. "We're all so happy to have accomplished that."

The win comes in UNB's fifth game of their 'return' season.

"I'm not sure we did much different tonight than in our first four games," said Woodland. "It takes a lot of belief, and tonight every player played with so much pride."

Stratton's goal came with just 41 seconds left in the first period, one of her eight shots on the Mounties net during the game.

Spitzig scored late in the second.

"I'm glad our group can finally take a deep breath as they move forward," said Reds head coach Sarah Hilworth. "They worked extremely hard tonight and it was nice to see them hungry to get the win."

"I think the biggest difference was our hunger in front of the net tonight. We hunted the puck for the full 60 minutes," said Hilworth.

With the win, UNB's record is now 1-1-3, good for a share of fourth place.

The Mounties see their record fall to 2-4 with the loss.

Mount Allison is now off until next Saturday, when they host Dalhousie.

The Reds skate back into action on Sunday, at home, against the UPEI Panthers. Game time is 3:00pm.
