(HALIFAX, NS) The Dalhousie Tigers beat the UNB Varsity Reds 3-1 Saturday night, in Halifax.
The very first point of the match provided an early highlight for the Varsity Reds.
The Tigers delivered a hard attack, but Drew Duncan(Winnipeg, MB) came up with a fantastic dig to save the point and UNB jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead.
The Tigers were able to rally, winning the first set 25-21.
Points were traded early in the second set, and UNB went up 9-5 with help from Pascal McCarthy(Fredericton, NB), who delivered three kills early.
Down 14-8, the Tigers once again rallied, but UNB won the set 25-22.
Jeffrey Walton(Sudbury, ON) was impressive as the Tigers built a 19-13 lead in the third set on route to a 25-20 win.
Points were traded back and forth in the fourth, with neither team able to gain a lead. The Tigers spread their offense around, getting kills from Matthew Woods(Halifax, NS) as well as Kobe Shannon(Halifax, NS) and Graham Schmuland(Calgary, AB).
The Varsity Reds were led by McCarthy, Brad Stewart(Wolfville, NS), and Ryan Colpitts(Fredericton, NB) with strong kills.
Dal took the tightly contested fourth 26-24.
The Subway Player of the Game was Matthew Donovan(London, ON), of the Tigers, for his game-high 21 kills, and 10 digs.
McCarthy finished with 17 kills in the match for the Varsity Reds.
Both teams will face-off again Sunday.
