Sydney Oitomen, of the women’s hockey team, is the UNB REDS/Papa John’s Pizza female Athlete of the Week.
The veteran forward played a critical role in ending one playoff series and beginning another on a positive note.
In Monday’s 2-1 win at Saint Mary’s, a win that clinched UNB’s Atlantic University Sport semi-final series victory, Oitomen scored the game-tying goal and then assisted on UNB’s winning goal with less than two minutes to play.
In Sunday’s 2-0 win over STFX in the opening game of the AUS championship series, she was 11-for-17 in the faceoff circle and had three shots on net.
“Syd has contributed to our team success through several facets,” said REDS’ interim head coach Kyle MacDonald. “On top of playing an important role on both our special teams, the intangibles she brings have made a huge impact. The way she’s stopping on pucks, blocking shots, and winning faceoffs has been invaluable.”
Oitomen and her teammates host the X-Women in game two of the AUS women’s final, Tuesday at 7:00pm. If necessary, a third game would be played Friday night, in Antigonish.
UNB has qualified for the U SPORTS Championship tournament, in Saskatoon, March 13-17.
