Javordo Mitchell, of the men’s basketball team, is the UNB REDS/Papa John’s Pizza male Athlete of the Week.
The 6’10” centre played a huge role as the REDS swept a pair of games against Acadia.
On Wednesday, in Wolfville, Mitchell scored 10 points, grabbed half a dozen rebounds and had three blocks in UNB’s 85-73 victory.
In Saturday’s exciting 86-82 win on home court, Mitchell recorded a double-double, scoring 11 points and grabbing a game-high 18 rebounds, including 13 defensive rebounds. He also had five blocks.
“Javordo came up huge for us in a couple of must win games,” said REDS’ head coach Joe Salerno. “His interior presence both on the glass and at the defensive end was a major factor in our wins. I feel he’s the best rim protector and rebounder in the AUS. You just don't see many players blocking five shots and hauling down 18 rebounds in a game. He is a special player, who always has an impact on the game, in more ways than one."
Mitchell and his REDS teammates are now preparing for this weekend’s AUS Championships, in Halifax.
