The UNB Varsity Reds women's cross country season opened up on Saturday in Halifax at the SMU/Dal Invitational. While the V-Reds team was small with only two athletes competing it was a good start to the season.
The two athletes who took part were second year Cailie McGuire and fourth year Priya Bhutani.
McGuire was the top finisher in 13th place overall in a time of 20:21s for the 5km course. Bhutani finished in 45th place overall in 22:09s.
Head coach Tim Randall said after the race, "Seeing only two women on the start line was different than past years, but I am very pleased with how the ladies ran. We will definitely be looking to field a full team at StFx, though."
The V-Reds failed to field a full team and weren't in the running for team scoring as the home team from Dalhousie won the team competition with 18pts. StFX was second with 52pts and Université de Moncton rounded out the top three with 107pts.
