REDS Win On Benko's Record Night
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS celebrated a straight sets win and an Atlantic University Sport record-breaking performance Friday night.
The REDS scored a straight-sets win over the Memorial Sea-Hawks in AUS women's volleyball play, a match in which UNB's Heather Benko (Sechelt, BC) became the conference's career leader in service aces.
UNB won with scores of 25-23, 25-21, and 25-13.
Benko served seven aces in the match, the fifth of which was the 146th of her career. That surpasses the previous mark of 145, established by Dalhousie's Courtney Baker from 2015-16 through 2019-20.
Benko also contributed eight kills in the win.
Talia Nixon (Fredericton, NB) had a game-high 21 assists and Jenna Adams (Truro, NS) added 15 digs.
Sarah Trowbridge (Sunnyside, NL) led the visitors with a game-high 21 digs while Karen Greek (Mount Pearl, NL) had 17 assists. Lydia Grawer (St. Louis, MO) had nine digs.
With the win, UNB's second straight, the REDS improve to 8-10, good for fourth place in the AUS standings.
The Sea-Hawks, who sit third, are now 10-7.
The teams conclude their two-match weekend series on Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 3:00pm AST.
