REDS Down Aigles Bleues 3-0
(MONCTON, NB) The UNB REDS completed a weekend sweep of the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues, scoring a straight sets win, Sunday, in Moncton.
The REDS won 25-19, 25-20 and 25-19, improving to 2-and-2 in 2022-23 Atlantic Univeristy Sport regular season play.
"Even though it was a 3-0 win for us, I thought both teams played better today," said REDS head coach Richard Schick. "We played well when things were tight and pulled away in set one. The second was similar and the third set had everything. We started strong and built a lead, we let them back in and then we pushed hard to come back with our serve and block-dig game."
Heather Benko (Sechelt, BC) led the REDS with 13 kills, while Jenna Adams (Truro, NS) and Emma Burns (Fredericton, NB) contributed 20 and 14 digs respectively.
Sara Chaisson (Pointe à Bouleau, NB) led Moncton's attack with eight kills, while Cassidy Martin (Dieppe, NB) had 10 digs.
"Moncton played their patented amazing defence in the third set," said Coach Schick. "That tested our patience in sticking with what we were trying to do."
Schick made note of a third set serving run by first-year RED Meghan Vaags (Abbotsford, BC), who took UNB from down 16-18 to up 22-18.
Vaags was named Subway Player of the Game.
Schick was also impressed with the play of Benko, another first-year RED.
"Heather showed us what she's capable of doing, both in attack and from the service line," said Schick.
Next up for the 0-and-4 Aigles Bleues, a home date against the Acadia Axewomen, on Friday, at 3:00pm.
The REDS play host to the Saint Mary's Huskies on Friday. First serve is scheduled for 6:00pm.
