V-Reds Fall In Five-Setter At MUN
Sea-Hawks sweep weekend series
(ST. JOHN'S, NL) For the second time in three matches, the UNB Varsity Reds forced a fifth and deciding set. But, once again, the Memorial Sea-Hawks prevailed.
The Sea-Hawks beat the Varsity Reds 3-2 on Sunday afternoon… 25-17, 25-21, 18-25, 16-25 and 15-9.
With the win, Memorial completed a sweep of the three match weekend series, improving to 8-6. The Varsity Reds are now 0-14.
The Sea-Hawks came out strong, taking an early lead of 13-7. They took advantage of weak Varsity Reds defensive play, building a healthy lead and taking the set 25-17.
In the second set, the V-Reds showed life, pulling even with Memorial at 15-15. But, the Sea-Hawks capitalized on Varsity Reds' errors and finished with a 25-21 win.
Cue the Varsity Reds comeback… of sorts.
The Varsity Reds looked strong in the third, building an early 6-3 lead, one they would not relinquish on their way to a 25-18 win.
The V-Reds strong offensive play continued in the fourth set, as UNB raced out to a 7-1 lead. They were able to hold the momentum, punishing the Sea-Hawks defensive frailty and extending the lead to 14-5. UNB won the fourth set 25-16.
In the end, the Sea-Hawks rallied, establishing an early 8-3 lead in the fifth. They'd use their offensive momentum to close out the game with a 15-9 set victory.
Kier Fey(Selkirk, MB) had 12 kills for the Sea-Hawks, while Emma Hackett(Clarenville, NL) had 10. Alison Poynter(St. John's, NL) had 36 assists for the hosts.Sea-Hawks.
Kieren Hume(Truro, NS) had 18 kills for the Varsity Reds, while Megan Kuciak(Ottawa, ON) contributed 13.
The Sea-Hawks are off until February 2nd, when they visit Dalhousie. The Varsity Reds host Dal next Saturday and Sunday.
