Sea-Hawks Blank Varsity Reds

(ST. JOHN'S, NL) One night after needing a fifth set to beat the UNB Varsity Reds, the Memorial Sea-Hawks blanked the V-Reds 3-0.

 

Memorial won 25-22, 25-20 and 25-22, improving to 7-6 while UNB falls to 0-13.

 

No team seemed to be able to pull away in the first set, with the Sea-Hawks and V-Reds tied 10-10 early on. The score was tied again, 21-21, before the Hawks took it 25-22.

 

The Sea-Hawks took an early 7-2 lead in the second, but UNB was able pull close, trailing 18-16 at the mid-way point. Memorial would win 25-20.

 

In the third, the Sea-Hawks looked good early, building a 14-9 lead. The Varsity Reds fought back to lead the set 20-18 before Memorial was able to rebound and win 25-22.

 

The Sea-Hawks got a strong performance from first year player Emma Hackett(Clarenville, NL), who had 11 kills, while Alison Poynter(St. John's, NL) recorded three kills and had 26 assists.

 

For the Varsity Reds, Kieren Hume(Truro, NS) had nine kills. Megan Kuciak(Ottawa, ON) added seven.

 

The Sea-Hawks and Varsity Reds wrap up their three match weekend series on Sunday. First serve is scheduled for 12:30pm Atlantic.
