V-Reds Drop Five-Setter At Memorial
Sea-Hawks edge UNB 3-2
(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The Memorial Sea-Hawks needed five sets to beat the UNB Varsity Reds 3-2, in the first of three weekend matches between the teams.
The Sea-Hawks won 25-22, 25-13, 20-25, 26-28 and 15-9.
The hosts got off to a flying start, leading by as many as ten in the first set before miscommunication saw that lead shortened to just a pair. The Sea-Hawks were able to regain their composure and closed the set out by a score of 25-22.
The second set got underway in very similar fashion, with the Sea-Hawks taking an early lead, which they were able to hold on to throughout the set, winning 25-13.
The Varsity Reds took their first lead of the match during the third set and never looked back. UNB lead by as many as ten, before winning 25-20.
The fourth set was a tightly contested affair, with a tie at 14-14. The Varsity Reds showed a strong offensive effort and took the set 28-26.
Memorial came out strong in the deciding set, jumping out to an early 10-1 lead. UNB would do their best to close the gap, cutting the Sea-Hawks lead to 13-8, but the Hawks would take the final set 15-9.
Kier Fey(Selkirk, MB) was named the Subway Player of the Match, finishing with 24 kills and 19 digs.
Alison Poynter(St. John's, NL) had a match-high 45 assists, while also registering 4 aces and 11 digs.
Maggie McLenahan(Oromocto, NB), who finished with a match-high 36 digs, led the Varsity Reds. UNB's Julia Diemert(Egbert, ON) had a team-high 19 points, while dropping in 5 aces in the loss.
The Sea-Hawks and Varsity Reds will square off twice more this weekend, with games scheduled for Saturday, at 6:30pm Atlantic, and Sunday, at 12:30pm Atlantic.
