UNB Falls At Acadia

UNB Falls At Acadia

(WOLFVILLE, NS) Solid play from the starting six Axewomen, including first year outside hitter Michaela Sabean's eight kills, gave the Acadia a 3-0 sweep of the visiting UNB Varsity Reds.

Up 10-4 early in the first set, Acadia allowed the VReds to work their way back to a 14-14 tie and take a short lived 19-18 lead.

Taking an Acadia 22-21 lead off of a Marissa Chin kill, UNB's service error combined with a service ace by Acadia's Olivia Boudreault gave the Axewomen some breathing room. An eventual attack error by UNB gave Acadia a 25-22 opening set win.

Tied at 11 in the second game, Acadia's Sabean spearheaded the pull-away with two kills that pushed the Axewomen into a 13-11 advantage that grew to a set high 23-14 lead. An Acadia attack error stalled the 10-3 Axewomen run.

Eventually winning the second set 25-17, Acadia raced out to a 5-3 third game lead. Maintaining a lead for the entire third set, the Axewomen took the third 25-19 and improve their record to 3-7 with the 3-0 win.

First year outside hitter Lauryn Renzella was named as Acadia's Subway Player of the Game, with five kills, nine digs and three service aces. Sabean added a game high eight kills and 15 digs.

Varsity Reds setter Maggie McLenahan had 15 assists, three kills, six digs and was named the UNB Subway Player of the Game. Claire Richard, Megan Kuciak and Janie-Eve Doucet had five, five and six kills respectively.

UNB drops to 3-7 and travel to Halifax to take on the first place Dalhousie Tigers, on Saturday.
