Martlets hand Varsity Reds their first loss of the season

QUEBEC CITY -- Ashley Norfleet and Catherine Amyot each tallied 19.5 points, pacing the No.9-ranked McGill women's volleyball team to a 3-2 come-from-behind victory over UNB at the second interlocking tournament of the season between the Atlantic (AUS) and Quebec (RSEQ) conferences.
It was the first loss of the season for UNB, which fell to 4-1.
The Martlets won by set scores of 25-18, 23-25, 21-25, 25-20 and 15-10, improving to 7-3 in regular-season play. McGill had an impressive 70-55 edge in kills, a 5-3 advantage in aces, while UNB had a 10-8 margin in blocks and a 79-69 in digs.
Norfleet, a 5-foot-11 power-hitter from Brossard, Que., racked up a game-high 18 kills, to go along with three assisted stuff blocks. She added 10 digs and a pair of assists. Amyot, a 5-foot-10 power-hitter from Ottawa, contributed 15 kills with four service aces and an assisted block. She also collected 13 digs.
The dynamic duo were among five Martlets to reach double digits in scoring. Marie-Pier Durivage of St. Nicolas, Que., posted 16.5 points (14 kills), while Virginie Hebert of St. Donat, Que., added 13.5 (12 kills) and Marie-Christine Lapointe of St. Jean-sur-Richelieu, Que., had 11.5 to go along with a team-high 21 digs.
Yasmeen Dawoodjee, a senior setter from Ottawa, posted a game-high 55 assists.
McGill will meet Memorial University of Newfoundland and Moncton on Saturday at 11 am and 6 pm, respectively.
