V-Reds dominate Capers 3-0

In AUS regular season action, the UNB Varsity Reds defeated the visiting Cape Breton Capers by a score of 3-0.

The individual scores of each set were: 25-11, 25-20, and 25-20.

UNB started the match strong pulling out early 7-3 with help from a strong visit to the service line by outside hitter Jacqueline Sebetovsky. Serving continued to be a strong point for the V-Reds with Vanja Mitrovic recording one of her six service aces to increase the lead, 16-6. Celina Abba added huge spikes to further the V-Red dominance. A final kill from middle Rebecca Glancy, ended the set 25-11 for UNB.

The second set was much more evenly matched. Cape Breton's Sarah Jane Ferguson made some big kills to keep up the even pace with the V-Reds at an early, 10-10 tally. Mitrovic and Abba continued to slam down balls for the V-Reds, building a small 14-12 differential. Cape Breton fought back, with some solid net play from Ferguson to keep things close, tying the match up at 20-20. The power of the V-Reds spikes proved to be too much for the Capers, as Rebecca Glancy knocked down the final point to take the set 25-20.

Mitrovic went back to the service line to start the third set, quickly racking up a 6-1 lead. Rebecca Glancy added to her total 12 kills to make the score 12-5. Cape Breton errors prolonged the lead to 18-11. The Capers inched closer to 19-14 on a block at the net from Allana Rendell. With their backs against the wall the Capers pulled up to 24-20 with a crucial block from Cassie MacDonald. Finally, as she did for the previous two sets, Glancy spikes down the last kill taking the set 25-20, and the match 3-0.

Coach Jilliane Goulet was impressed with her team's performance, saying. "CBU did a good job at pushing back today, they definitely gave us a match, they pushed us to play better and you could see that in the end result."

The next action for the Varsity Reds will be after the Christmas break on Sunday, January 12th, where they will play host to the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues, at the Richard J. Currie Centre.
