V-Reds sweep Axewomen 3-0

The UNB Varsity Reds swept the visiting University of Acadia Axewomen by a score of 3-0. Capitalizing on Acadia's technical problems combined with huge individual efforts by UNB sealed the deal for the V-Reds.

The individual set scores were: 25-21, 25-22, and 25-10. UNB's Rebecca Glancy and Vanja Mitrovic led the way with kills, combining for 28 of the team's total 41.

The match commenced with both teams splitting16 points to reach a score of 8-8. UNB's Rebecca Glancy recorded three of her game total 17 kills to get the V-Reds ahead 12-9. The Varsity Reds continued the onslaught with outside hitter Paige Paulsen's strong serving leading to a 23-16 differential. Acadia clawed back winning the next 6 points on UNB errors creating a 23-21 score. UNB won the set 25-21 on two final Acadia errors.

In the second set both teams came out strong, quickly building an even 6-6 score. The even play continued until UNB got into some technical trouble, allowing Acadia to achieve a 14-11 lead. Heavy hitting from UNB's Vanja Mitrovic, got the V-Reds to within one at 17-16. UNB veteran Paulsen contributed some clutch serving to attain the lead 23-22. Finally on an Acadia error, UNB took the second set 25-22.

The final set started with even play, both teams recording six points respectively. Errors continued to be a problem for Acadia allowing UNB to pull ahead 10-7. The Varsity Reds continued the domination as Mitrovic and Glancy exchanged kills to get the V-Reds to a commanding 18-8 lead. With a final service ace from Glancy the V-Reds took the set 25-10, and the match 3-0.

Coach Jilliane Goulet was pleased with the performance of her team saying: "Our serve receive game was what gave us that edge, we got ahead and stayed level headed, and hopefully we can continue this level of play."


The V-Reds will travel to Halifax November 15th as they take on the Saint Mary's Huskies.
