V-Reds Women's Volleyball Update # 3
Last Week:
The Varsity Reds trained for two weeks in preparation for hosting RMC (Kingston, ON) on Friday evening at 7:00pm. UNB will then take off Saturday-Monday for Thanksgiving weekend before returning to the court for training prior to the 2010 UNB Invitational on October 15th-17th. For the first time this season fourth-year middle Tanya Paulin (Bathurst, NB) dressed for the match after sitting out the first five matches recovering from her August surgery, however she was limited to just one game as she will ease back into things. The 2009-10 1st Team Conference All-Star has been training with the squad and is expected to play more next weekend. Fourth-year setter Alyson Clow (Kensington, PEI) is still out with mononucleosis while rookie left-side Taylor MacDonald (Bathurst, NB) was injured in practice, leaving the V-Reds with only eleven players dressed for the match.
RMC 0 @ UNB 3 (26-24, 25-10, 27-25)
Game Notes:
-5th year left-side Erica Hay (Sussex, NB) had 9 kills, 13 points and 11 digs while 2nd year right-side/middle Rebecca Glancy (Toronto, ON) had 8 kills and 11 points.
-4th year middle Tanya Paulin (Bathurst, NB) had 5 kills on 5 swings to hit 1.000% while scoring 8 points playing in just one game.
-2nd year setter Amanda Bakker (Winnipeg, MB) chipped in 28 assists and 5 points.
Coach’s Comments:
“I thought it was step in the right direction. We are much different with Jill and Erica on the left-side and with Tanya back in the line-up we can do that more consistently. Seeing Rebecca score both from the right-side and middle was a real positive sign as was Amanda’s setting as she continues to get better each time out. The match was something we can build on as we head into what will be a tough home tournament next weekend.”
UNB Team Record:
Conference Play 0 – 0
Non-CIS Exhibition Play 1 – 0
CIS Exhibition Play 1 – 4
Playoff Results 0 – 0
Overall Record 2 – 4
Upcoming:
The Varsity Reds will now get set to host their annual UNB Invitational Tournament. MONCTON (2008-09 AUS Champions), ACADIA (an AUS semi-finalist last season), STFX (who captured the Dalhousie Invitational Tournament a few weeks ago) and CAPE BRETON (who recently returned home from the Brock Tournament with a 3-1 record against OUA teams) join the V-Reds at the Main Gym October 15th-17th. On Friday UNB plays CAPE BRETON at 1:00pm and STFX at 7:00pm. Other matches go at 3:00pm, 5:00pm and 9:00pm. Saturday UNB plays MONCTON at 1:00pm and ACADIA at 7:00pm with other matches going at 11:00am, 3:00pm and 5:00pm. Sunday’s playoff rounds go at 10:00am, 12:00pm and the Championship Final at 2:00pm. UNB has captured seven consecutive Gold Medals at this event, however with a deep talented field of teams and the parity across the conference now, the V-Reds will need to be at their very best in hopes of making it eight.
