V-Reds Women's Volleyball Update # 1
Last Week:
The Varsity Reds kicked off their 2010-11 exhibition season by travelling to Maine to play Bowdoin College (Brunswick, ME) on Saturday and also spent the weekend participating in some team building exercises. UNB’s fourth-year middle Tanya Paulin (Bathurst, NB) did not dress for the exhibition match as she is still recovering from her August surgery. The 2009-10 1st Team Conference All-Star is expected to re-join the team on-court sometime in October.
UNB 3 @ BOWDOIN COLLEGE 1 (25-21, 15-25, 25-23, 25-15)
The Varsity Reds started out the match a little tentative but held on for a 25-21 win to go up 1-0. In set two the Reds fell behind and couldn’t recover. Game three saw UNB take a big lead late only to see Bowdoin climb back in the game with lots of scrappy defensive play. UNB was able to pull away midway through set four to win the match 3-1. Fifth year right-side Jill Blanchard (Saint John, NB) was the Varsity Reds top scorer and passer while “UNB” rookie setter Amanda Bakker (Winnipeg, MB, 2nd year eligibility) looked sharp setting her first university match in over a year. Rookie middle Celina Abba (Fredericton, NB) caught fire midway through set three with some loud kills and stuff blocks. All twelve players dressed saw court time
Coach’s Comments:
“I thought we were a little nervous at the start. The different ball and the fact they have been training and playing matches for a month or so had an impact, as they seemed much more polished. I thought it was a neat experience though and it gave us tons to work on, so we enjoyed the opportunity and were thankful Coach Karen Corey agreed to play us. We’ll need to pass and execute way better to have any type of success in the coming weeks though, however I’m confident it will come.”
UNB Team Record:
Conference Play 0 – 0
Non-CIS Exhibition Play 1 – 0
CIS Exhibition Play 0 – 0
Playoff Results 0 – 0
Overall Record 1 – 0
