(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS women’s track and field team is naming Amherst, Nova Scotia native and jumps specialist Haley Angus to their recruiting class of 2023.

Angus has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the REDS ahead of the 2023-2024 Atlantic University Sport season.

“Haley will be a great addition to our women’s jump group,” said Chris Belof, head coach of the REDS’ track and field and cross-country teams. “She’s a a big talent from a great development club and school in Truro.”

“During my years competing, I always saw UNB coming out on top and having fun at the same time, and I wanted that,” said Angus. “Visiting campus and meeting the coaches and team, I felt comfortable and welcomed. It made me even more excited.”

The 17-year-old is finishing her Grade 12 year at Amherst Regional High School.

In 2022, Angus was a member of the combined Nova Scotia and Nunavut team at the National Legion Youth Championships, and in 2023 she won gold in both the long and triple jump at the Canadian Indoor Championships.

“One of my greatest strengths as an athlete is my work ethic,” said Angus. “I'm driven and passionate about my sport, and enjoy being around others who are the same, which is why I love being a part of a team. Track is a team sport where you work towards individual goals, so I think it’s as important to support and encourage your teammates as it is to work towards your independent goals,” she said.

“We’re excited to see Haley grow, contribute, and continue the strong tradition with our women’s jump program,” said Coach Belof. “Haley will play a key role with our team immediately.”

Angus says her goals with the REDS are to grow as an athlete and qualify for the U SPORTS Championships.

Angus will study Business while attending UNB.
