Myatt named AUS MVP, leads charge for women at AUS championship
Over the course of two days the V-Reds ran, jumped, and threw their hearts out achieving countless personal bests, school records, medals, and awards.
Sarah Myatt led the charge for the UNB Varsity Reds women's track and field team as they capped off their season with an extremely successful 2015 Subway AUS championship. Over the course of two days the V-Reds ran, jumped, and threw their hearts out achieving countless personal bests, school records, medals, and awards.
As a team, the women scored 56 team points to finish third overall. Dalhousie won the AUS team title with 165 points, StFX was second with 106 points and then UNB with 56 points. Université de Moncton was fourth with 27 points, Saint Mary's was fifth with 13 points, Acadia was sixth with 11 points, and Saint Thomas was seventh with 2 points.
Fourth-year captain Myatt was strong the entire weekend. She won the 600m capping off an undefeated season in the event this year against AUS competition and making her now a four-time AUS champion in the event.
Myatt went on to win the 1000m. But she wasn't done there as she joined teammates to run on all three relay teams bringing home a silver medal in the 4x800m and bronze medals in the 4x200m and 4x400m relay tying her for most individual points at the championship.
Myatt set UNB school records in the 1000m and as part of the 4x200m relay, and was named AUS track field female MVP for the 2015 season. She will be the lone female travelling to the CIS national championships in Windsor March 12-15 for both the 600m and 1000m.
First-year Sydney MacDonald closed off her rookie season by having a great championships. In the high jump, MacDonald finished with a season best and silver medal. She would add one more bronze medal via the 60m hurdles. MacDonald was also seventh in the 60m equalling her season best and school record, seventh in the long jump breaking her own UNB school record, and ninth in the shot put.
Second-year Tess McDonald added to her AUS medal collection by repeating as bronze medalist in the triple jump. She also ran a great leg on the 4x200m relay helping the team to the bronze medal and a new school record. Rounding out the 4x200m team with Myatt and McDonald were Anne Ugabi and Ashley Gallagher.
The silver medal-winning 4x800m team consisted of Myatt, Cailie McGuire, Katie Robinson, and Nathalie Cecire.
The bronze medal-winning 4x400m team consisted of Gallagher, McGuire, Cecire, and Myatt.
"The AUS champs are such an exciting two days," said UNB head coach Jason Reindl. "I am so proud of this team of women. While small in number they rallied as a team, supported each other, and achieved some amazing results."
