Tess McDonald fourth in triple jump as UNB takes McGill Team Challenge
A small but mighty group of Varsity Reds took part in the 2015 McGill Team Challenge.
A small but mighty group of women took part in the 2015 McGill Team Challenge. More than 20 universities from across Ontario, Quebec, and Atlantic Canada took part in the competition with 19 schools scoring team points. UNB finished in 11th place with 19 points.
The highest finisher for the team individually was Tess McDonald who finished fourth in the triple jump with a distance of 11.20m, a new UNB record. Tess is currently ranked #3 in the AUS and #14 in the CIS.
Tying McDonald for top finish, fourth, was the 4x800m relay team which overcame an early race fall to still set a school record of over 20 seconds only then to find out they were disqualified. But after several discussions with the officials and a review of the race video were finally reinstated. Currently the women's team ranks #1 in the AUS and #9 in the CIS.
Other highlights of the weekend included Sarah Myatt finishing 14th in the 600m out of 60 athletes in a time of 1:35.17s, which sets a new UNB record and puts her a definitive #1 in AUS ranking in the event.
Sydney MacDonald handily broke the UNB pentathlon record finishing in fifth place with a score of 2907pts, #4 in the AUS and #14 in the CIS. During the pentathlon MacDonald also broke the school record in the long jump with a jump of 4.95m.
"The McGill Team Challenge is always a highlight meet for our team. With improvements to personal bests, records, rankings and results, it was everything that we wanted. This group of talented women continue to raise the bar and put pressure on their competitors within the conference," said head coach Jason Reindl.
The team now takes a week off from competition as they recover and prepare for the NB Indoor Championships being held in Oromocto on February 7. This will be their last competition before the conference championships being held in Moncton on February 28-March 1.
