UNB divides to conquer two meets in track and field
The Varsity Reds saw four school records fall across two meets this past weekend.
January 17th, 2015 was an extremely busy day for the V-Reds Track and Field team seeing the team split in two. One group headed to the Moncton JSA Open while the other group made the trip to Halifax to compete at the Nova Scotia Indoor.
At the Moncton JSA Open the team was lead by co-captain Katie Wallace who broke her own school record in the 3000m running 11:07.51s. Wallace's result was the only female record to be set in Moncton on the day.
Also having successful days in Moncton were Tess McDonald who jumped 10.82m in the triple jump for second in her age group and 4.62m in the long jump, which was again good for second in her age group.
Fallon Gaudet also finished second in her long jump with a farthest jump of 4.71m
The highlights from the women's team though came in Halifax. Leading the team was the other co-captain Sarah Myatt who finished first in the 600m (1:35.96s) and 2nd in the 300m (42.17s). Both of these times were school records and personal bests for Myatt. While Myatt doesn't usually compete in the 300m, she took full advantage of the opportunity. She now holds the UNB school records in the 300m, 600m, 1000m, 1500m, and is a member of all three relay record teams (4x200m, 4x400m, and 4x800m). With her results Myatt now ranks #1 in the 600m in the AUS and #3 in the 300m in the AUS. At the time of writing Myatt's 600m time also ranks her #8 in the nation in the 600m.
Sydney MacDonald won the 60m hurdles in halifax with new school record, New Brunswick provincial record, and personal best time of 9.47s. This time presently ranks MacDonald 3rd in the AUS. She also competed in the high jump clearing 1.50m, and the 600m. MacDonald's major focus is the pentathlon and next week she will compete in her first university heptathlon at the McGill Team Challenge where she will go after the school record of 2332pts. However, she will most definitely have her sights set on the provincial junior record of 2984pts set in 2011 by her sister Samantha.
Also competing in Halifax was Cailie McGuire who ran both the 1000m and 1500m. McGuire continues to set new indoor personal bests running 3:05.67s in the 1000m and 4:59.11s in the 1500m.
"We split our team which isn't easy," said UNB head coach Jason Reindl. "Athletes gain support from one another and feed off of each others energy so for our women's team to set four new school records today is great. These ladies competed extremely well and accomplished what we wanted,"
The team will have a quick turn around this week as they get in a few recovery workouts and refine some technical actions before leaving for Montreal on Thursday when the team will compete at the McGill Team Challenge in Montreal on the 23rd and 24th. At last year's event over 20 universities from across Canada competed at the event making it one of the largest in the country.
