The 2014-2015 UNB Track and Field season officially got under way at the 15th annual Gagetown Last Chance meet, which took place on Saturday November 29th at the camp Gagetown track. The event hosted athletes across all age groups but the majority were found in the university age classes where UNB had the biggest team by far.
Leading the way for the V-Reds were captain Sarah Myatt and first-year Sydney MacDonald. Myatt won both the 600m and the 200m with times of 1:37.28s and 27.14s. Myatt's time in the 600m is currently #1 in the AUS with the next closest being 1:38.64s. Sydney MacDonald broke her own school record in the 60m again with a time of 8.10s taking another 0.12s off her previous record. Sydney followed this up with a second place finish to Myatt in the 200m coming across the line in 27.56s.
Several other athletes opened up their seasons with lifetime personal bests including Anne Ugabi in the 60m with 8.18s, Victoria Oduneye in the weight throw with 11.72m, and Cailie McGuire in the 1500m with 4:59.10s (#1 ranked in the AUS).
"The first meet of the year is always an interesting one. The goal for all the athletes is to compete to the best of their abilities but we all have to remember that it is very early in the season. Our goal isn't to achieve our best of the year in November but achieve a mark that builds confidence and sets us up to come back in January ready to go and attack the final 10 weeks of the season," said head coach Jason Reindl.
Next up for the V-Reds will be focusing on their studies as they prepare for the first term final exams. A number of Reds will also compete on December 20th in Moncton at the Moncton Last Chance meet. After that the team will split with the majority going to Moncton for the UdeM JSA Open on January 17th while another group will head to Halifax to compete at the ANS Indoor Open on the same day. The team will quickly regroup as they will head to Montreal on Thursday January 22nd to compete on the 23rd and 24th in the McGill Team Challenge, which is the biggest university meet in Canada.
