Moore's Gold Among Four Medals For UNB
(HALIFAX, NS) The UNB REDS captured four medals on the second day of competition at the 2022 Subway Atlantic University Sport Swimming Championships, Saturday, in Halifax.
Leading the way was fifth-year RED Jennifer Moore, who won the women's 50 metre freestyle.
"I can't even explain how happy I am," said Moore, who won in a time of 26.32 seconds, which also qualifies her for the U SPORTS Championships, later this month, at Université de Laval.
"I've had U SPORTS in my sights for five years and have been working towards it every day," she said. "Seeing a time on the board that was under the qualifying standard was a shock. Earning a gold medal surrounded by incredible competitors was just a huge bonus."
Moore's gold medal came moments after her teammate, Sophie Casey, captured the silver medal in the women's 200 metre breaststroke.
Sydney Bewsher followed a short time later, taking the bronze medal in the women's 200 metre butterfly.
Then Moore teamed with Alexie Sanford, Lauren Goodine and Jessie Collett to capture the silver medal in the women's 4-by-200 metre freestyle relay.
"The women's team had a fantastic evening," said REDS head coach Marta Belsh. "I'm so proud of them. It's incredible to see them put the race together and execute it. It's not an easy thing to do."
On the men's side, Blake Kingston was the best of the REDS. He swam to a 5th place finish in the 200 metre breaststroke.
"They all raced this evening with a strong believe in their abilities.," said Coach Belsh. "The support from the team during the races was amazing."
With Saturday's four medals, UNB now has five through two days of competition.
UNB is currently fourth in the women's team standings, while the REDS men are fifth.
The AUS Swimming Championships, at Dalhousie University, wraps up Sunday. Preliminaries go at 10:00am. Finals are scheduled to being at 6:00pm.
