REDS Behind After Day One Of Kemp-Fry Meet
(HALIFAX, NS) The first day of the 2021 Kemp-Fry Invitational Swim Meet kicked off Friday night with timed long distance finals, the 800-metre freestyle relays and 50-metre butterfly, breaststroke and backstroke heats.
In the women's 800-metre freestyle, Dalhousie took the top four spots with Reagan Crowell leading the way, finishing in U SPORTS Championship-qualifying time. Lauren Goodine was the top REDS swimmer, finishing in 7th place.
Dal's Logan Sparkes won the men's 1500-metre freestyle, touching the wall in a U SPORTS-qualifying time of 15:42.35.
In the women's 50-metre butterfly heats, Dalhousie's Lauren Mosher, Veronica Hollick and Christian Payne all posted U SPORTS-qualifying times heading into tomorrow evenings finals. UNB's Erik Staeben was 7th fastest in the men's prelims.
Acadia's Jessica Pelletier posted the top time in the women's 50-metre backstroke heats while Payne was fastest in the men's heats.
It was Dal's Abbey Corish who posted the top time in the women's 50-metre breaststroke, a U SPORTS-qualifying time of 32.32. Teammate Adam Bouma also posted a national championship qualifying time in the men's event touching the wall in a time of 28.89. Sophie Casey was the fastest of the REDS, running 7th in the women's heats.
Dalhousie won the women's 800-metre freestyle relay. Memorial and Acadia foursomes were second and third respectively. The UNB team of Alexie Sanford, Maggie Gray, Goodine and Jesse Collett swam fourth.
Dal won the men's 800-metre freestyle relay, followed by Acadia and Memorial. The UNB men were 5th.
After the first day of competition, the Tigers lead both the men and women team standings. UNB sits third in the men's competition and fifth in the women's.
The heats continue Saturday morning, followed by finals at 5:00pm Atlantic time.
