(FREDERICTON, NB) Emily Maillet, of Riverview, New Brunswick, is being named as the first member of the UNB Reds women’s swimming team’s recruiting class of 2020.

Maillet has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent, and will join the Reds ahead of the 2020-21 Atlantic University Sport season.

An eight-year veteran of the Codiac Vikings Aquatic Club, Maillet is a versatile swimmer who competes in freestyle, breaststroke, and medley events. She served as one of the team’s captains during the 2019-20 season.

“Competitive swimming has been an important part of my life for the past eight years and I believe I still have more to contribute to the sport,” said Maillet. “While visiting UNB and swimming with the Reds, I enjoyed the training environment and the bond between the swimmers.”

Maillet was a ‘next generation’ qualifier with CVAC in 2019, which allowed her to train with the club’s national development group. She also swam with the team at Moncton’s École L’Odyssée.

“Emily is a hard-working and driven swimmer,” said Reds head coach Marta Belsh. “One of her strengths is her versatility. She’s able to perform in a number of different events and distances. That will be a tremendous help for our team in gaining points in these events.”

At the 2019 NB Open, Maillet won an age class 100-metre breaststroke, and took third in the 200-metre individual medley. At the 2019 New Brunswick Long Course Championships, she earned age class silver medals in the 50 and 200 metre breaststrokes, and 200-metre butterfly.

In 2019, Maillet was named winner of CVAC’s ‘Leading By Example Award.’

“As an athlete, I give one hundred percent during practices and at competitions,” said Maillet. “As a teammate, I’m someone who keeps a positive mindset and am always there to support my teammates. I’m excited to join the team and be a part of the Reds.”

Maillet will study Kinesiology while attending UNB.
