(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Reds women’s swimming team is completing its recruiting class of 2020 with the addition of Sydney Bewsher.

The 17-year-old, from Bedford, Nova Scotia, will join the Reds ahead of the 2020-21 Atlantic University Sport season.

Finishing her Grade 12 year at Bedford’s Charles P. Allen High School, Bewsher is a veteran member of the Halifax Wavecutters Aquatic Club.

She swims butterfly, backstroke and individual medley events.

“I’m a hard worker and I’m dedicated to doing everything I can to improve,” said Bewsher. “Among my short-term goals, I want to adapt quickly to the university swimming environment, and be a strong contributor to the team. Long-term, I want to achieve my highest potential, both academically and athletically.”

In 2017, Bewsher was a member of Nova Scotia’s Canada Games team.

At the 2020 Nova Scotia Championships, Bewsher won the women’s 200 metre butterfly and posted top five finishes in a number of other events.

“Her performances at the Nova Scotia championships are a great jumping up point,” said Reds head coach Marta Belsh. “We’re looking forward to seeing her grow and get better. Sydney impressed us with her attention to detail and the amount of effort she puts into her training.”

Bewsher will study Science while attending UNB.
