Smal Qualifies For U SPORTS Championships
Posts national championship times in two events
(HALIFAX, NS) UNB's Leah Smal (Fredericton, NB) will go back to the U SPORTS Swimming Championships in 2020.
Smal qualified for the national championships in two events at the Kemp-Fry Invitational Meet, hosted by Dalhousie University, in Halifax on the weekend.
Smal qualified in the women's 50 metre freestyle, in a time of 26.18 seconds, on Saturday, and qualified in the women's 100 metre freestyle, in a time of 56.88 seconds, on Sunday.
In the 50 free, Smal finished second. In the 100 free, she was third.
Smal also finished second in the women's 50 metre butterfly, on Friday, finishing a mere 1/10th of a second back of the winner, was third in Saturday's 200 metre freestyle, and third in the 50 metre butterfly on Sunday.
In Friday's men's 50 metre breaststroke final, UNB's Noah Horwood (Fredericton, NB) was sixth in a race that saw the top seven swimmers all finish within 9/10ths of a second.
Erik Staeben (Fredericton, NB) was 5th in Sunday's men's 50 metre butterfly.
In Saturday's women's 400 metre freestyle relay, UNB took third place behind teams from Dal and McGill. Jennifer Moore (Hamilton, ON), Hannah Casey (Bedford, NS), Alexie Sanford (New Maryland, NB), and Smal swam for the Reds.
The Reds women were also third in Sunday's 400 metre medley relay.
UNB finished fifth in both the women's and men's overall standings.
McGill and Memorial joined regular Atlantic University Sport competitors Dal, Acadia, Mount Allison, and the Reds, in this weekend's meet.
The next meet on the AUS swimming schedule is the AUS Invitational, at Dal, January 18th and 19th.
