UNB Makes Splash AT UPEI Meet
(CHARLOTTETOWN, PE) The final swim meet before the AUS championships is underway and the UNB Varsity Reds are making waves.
Charli LeBlanc and Marya Peters finished first and second in the women's 50-metre freestyle, to lead the UNB effort. LeBlanc edged her teammate by just four-tenths of a second for the win.
"We push each other, but in the end we're teammates," said Peters. "So, if she does well, then I'm happy for her."
LeBlanc also won the women's 50-metre butterfly and helped UNB to a second place finish in the women's 4 X 100-metre medley relay.
Peters scored a third place finish in the women's 200-metre freestyle.
Victoria Gardiner took third in the women's 800-metre freestyle.
Michael Walz led the Varsity Reds men, racing third in the 200-metre butterfly, despite not being fully healthy. "I've had a hard time getting to practice and mentally, I've had a hard time."
Walz says he was sick over the Christmas break and has had trouble maintaining his intensity. He was happy to have a day of competition behind him. "I'm definitely healthy again," said Walz. "This meet was a good kick in the butt and I think if I can get myself back into the mindset I was in pre-exam period, then I could perform at my best yet, at AUs and possibly even make it to CIs."
Walz swam the butterfly leg for UNB in the men's 4 X 100-metre medley relay, pulling the Varsity Reds into a third place finish. "My times are behind where I want them to be, behind where they were last semester, but at this point I'm taking the opportunity to learn things about my technique," said Walz.
Charles Waugh took third in the men's 100-metre backstroke.
Day two of the Dave Mills Memorial Invitational goes Sunday.
