(MONCTON, NB) Sophia Maillet's (Fredericton, NB) goal in the 65th minute gave the UNB REDS a 2-1 win over l'Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action on Wednesday evening.
"It was good to get three points tonight, in tough conditions and on the road," said REDS' head coach Jon Crossland. "They played us really well. They set up a good block and made it hard for us to play in the first half."
Maillet's fourth goal of the season drew an assist from Jillian Larose (Ottawa, ON).
UNB's Julia Dalley (Burlington, ON) and Moncton's Zoe Brockbank (Grand Digue, NB) traded first half goals, Dalley's in the 20th minute and Brockbank's in the 27th.
The REDS dominated offensively, putting 14 shots on the Moncton net. The Aigles Bleues managed just three on Ava Henry (Baldwin , ON) in the REDS' net.
"In the second half, we found a little bit more tempo and speed and we limited their opportunities," said Crossland. "We'll take the three points, get back to work on Friday and get ready for Saturday and the playoffs. There is still important soccer ahead."
With the win, UNB is now 9-2-0 (W-L-T) and atop the AUS standings.
Moncton's record falls to 2-7-2, good for 8th place in the ten-team league.
Both teams have just one regular season game remaining.
Moncton hosts the STFX X-Women on Friday in a 5:00pm kick-off.
The X-Women are in Fredericton on Saturday to face the REDS. Game time is 5:00pm.
