(SACKVILLE, NB) The UNB REDS scored a 1-0 win over the Mount Allison Mounties Saturday afternoon, securing a first round Atlantic University Sport women's soccer playoff bye in the process.
"I'm really happy for and proud of the girls for their performances and for earning a bye before Thanksgiving," said REDS' head coach Jon Crossland. "It wasn't an easy day. They played really well. We did match their battle level, but they made it hard. It was October soccer and a good introduction to what the rest of the season will be like."
The REDS scored the only goal of the game in the 17th minute when Heidi Lauwerijssen (Kensington, PE) beat the Mounties keeper.
Despite multiple chances for both sides in the second half, neither team was able to change the 1-0 scoreline, and the three points would push UNB to the top of the AUS table.
"I'm happy for the girls, they've put a lot of work into this season so far, but we've got lots more left to do, so we'll look to keep things going from here."
UNB is now 8-2-0 (W-L-T) and currently atop the AUS standings.
Their next action comes next Wednesday, October 16th, when they face the Aigles Bleues, in Moncton. Game time is 5:00pm.
The Mounties visit host Dalhousie on Sunday.
