(WOLFVILLE, NS) The UNB REDS scored three first half goals and then hung on to beat the Acadia Axewomen 3-2 in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action, Friday, in Wolfville.
"It's a hard place to get a win, so it was good to get that job done tonight," said REDS' head coach Jon Crossland.
The REDS took an early lead in the first half with goals from Jillian Larose (Ottawa, ON) and Jillian Curtis (Corpus Christi, TX), followed by a third goal from Carolina Grzesniak (Oshawa, ON), on a penalty.
Acadia fought back in the second half with two goals from Lauren Clarke (Dartmouth, NS), but it wasn't enough to overcome UNB's advantage.
REDS' keeper Breanna Habinski (Welland, ON) delivered an outstanding performance, making nine saves and earning Player of the Game honours for her team. Milena Ramirez (Wolfville, NS) made two saves in the Acadia net.
The match saw a total of 36 shots between the two teams.
"We had a great first half," said Crossland. "I thought we executed the game plan just the way we'd talke about. We knew they push back in the second half and I said this would be the toughest half of the season and it was. They're a good team."
"They possess the ball really well and it was a good battle," said Crossland. "We were able to score some goals and win against a good team. We'll take the three points and get ready for Dal tomorrow."
The win, UNB's seventh straight, improves the REDS' record to 7-1-0 (W-L-T), while Acadia falls to 4-2-2.
Acadia wraps up their weekend on the road, Sunday, against UPEI in Charlottetown, while UNB visits Dalhousie on Saturday. Game time is 5:30pm.
