(FREDERICTON, NB) Carolina Grzesniak (Oshawa, ON)) scored a hat-trick to lead the UNB REDS to a 5-1 victory over the Université de Moncton Aigles Bleues on Sunday afternoon at
UNB's BMO Centre.
This victory marks the REDS fifth consecutive win, a feat UNB hasn't achieved in over 25 years.
"We have all been putting in a lot of time, work, and effort into this season, said Grzesniak, named Tim Horton's Player of the Game. "I feel like the team really came together this year."
The REDS kicked off the game with an early goal from Jillian Larose (Ottawa, ON), in the 4th
minute of play.
Not long after, due to a lapse in defensive play by the home team, the Aigles Bleues managed
to find the back of the REDS' net with a goal from Madeleine Belliveau (Dieppe, NB) in the 12th
minute, leveling the game.
The REDS rallied to regain the lead with Grzesniak's first, off a corner kick in the 24th minute.
Just ten minutes after entering the game, Sophia Malliet (Fredericton, NB) extended the REDS'
lead with a goal, making the score 3-1 as the teams went to the half-time break.
The REDS pulled away during the second half.
Grzesniak set the tone early, scoring on back-to-back penalty kicks in the 51st and 56th minutes.
Despite multiple shot attempts by the REDS during the final moments of play, the final score was 5-1.
"We still have half of the season to go but I'm glad we've been able to get started on the right foot," said Grzesniak.
Up next for the Aigles Bleues, a Saturday afternoon game on home turf against Cape Breton.
Kick-off is scheduled for 1:00pm.
UNB returns to action Saturday when they host UPEI. Game time is 1:00pm.
