REDS Win Third Straight
(ST. JOHN'S, NL) The UNB REDS completed a weekend sweep of the Memorial Sea-Hawks with a 1-0 win, Saturday afternoon, in Atlantic University Sport women's soccer action in, St. John's.
Heidi Lauwerijssen's (Kensington, PE) goal, in the 59th minute stood as the game's only score and gave the REDS their third consecutive victory.
Meeting for the second time in 24 hours, the two teams engaged in a battle for ball possession through much of the opening half. Neither team could generate much in the way of scoring chances.
An early Sea-Hawks opportunity was turned away by REDS' keeper Ava Henry (Baldwin, ON).
Mid-way through the first, Sophia Maillet (Fredericton, NB) created an opportunity of her own, but her hard shot was stopped and the teams went to the half-time break locked at 0-0.
Lauwerijssen's goal came off a corner kick by Carolina Grzesniak (Oshawa, ON).
Memorial's Zoe Rowe (Conception Bay South, NL) had a couple of late chances, but the REDS back line and Henry held UNB's lead.
The loss drops Memorial's record to 1-3. The Sea-Hawks next action is Saturday, when they visit Acadia.
With the win, the REDS grab a share of first place in the AUS standings with nine points on three wins and a loss.
The REDS return home next weekend, hosting Saint Mary's on Saturday and Moncton on Sunday. Saturday's game is scheduled to start at 3:00pm. Sunday's tilt is set to kick-off at 1:00pm.
