REDS Rally Past Mounties
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB REDS scored their first victory of the season Sunday afternoon on a wet turf at UNB's BMO Centre.
The REDS scored a pair of second half goals to rally past the Mount Allison Mounties 3-2.
"It feels amazing, nothing else compares," said REDS' striker Mackenzie Walsh (Middle Sackville, NS), named Tim Horton's Player of the Game. "Every single win is important. It's a really short season and every game is important. We've just got to keep building off it, from performance base, points base, everything."
After significant pressure by the home team throughout much of the first half, it was the visitors who opened the scoring.
On a rebound off a free kick, in the 30th minute, Taryn Greco (Sault Ste. Marie, ON) fired the ball past the reach of REDS' keeper Ava Henry (Baldwin, ON).
The Mounties added to their lead a short time later, on a goal by Emma Tye (Bedford, NS).
The REDS were able to get one back before the half time break when Walsh headed in a corner kick, UNB's first goal of the 2024 season.
Second half substitute Julia Currie (Sydney, NS) made an immediate impact, scoring on a left-footed shot in the 49th minute to pull the REDS even.
The REDS went ahead in the 64th minute when Jillian Curtis (Corpus Chrisi, TX) scored on a corner kick, the ball bouncing past Katie Cabot (Cochrane, AB) in the Mounties' net.
"We didn't get down at all," said Walsh. "We went into half time spirits high, kept it positive in the locker room, and believed that we could do it. We knew we could and that's what we showed on the field in the second half."
The Mounties, now 0-2-0 (W-L-T), return to action on Thursday when they visit Moncton. Game time is 5:00pm.
The REDS, now 1-1-0, will be on the road next weekend, visiting St. John's, NL. They face the SeaHawks Friday, at 4:30pm Atlantic, in the weekend series opener.
