(FREDERICTON, NB) Julia Currie is leaving the Reds to become a Red.

The Sydney, Nova Scotia, native is graduating from the Riverview High School Reds and joining the UNB Reds.

The 17-year-old forward has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent, and will join UNB’s women’s soccer team ahead of the 2020 Atlantic University Sport season.

A member of the varsity girls soccer team at Riverview High, and Cape Breton FC, Currie boasts an impressive soccer resume.

She’s been part of Nova Scotia’s provincial team for four years, helping win Atlantic championships in 2016 and 2017.

With Riverview’s Reds, Currie helped the school earn a provincial championship silver medal in 2016, and bronze medals in 2017 and 2019.

She was named Cape Breton FC’s Offensive Player of the Year in 2018, and Soccer Nova Scotia’s community regional player of the year in 2019.

“Julia is an exciting addition to our program,” said Reds head coach Jon Crossland. “Julia has a great attitude, personality and approach that will be an asset to our team during her time here. You take that personality and combine it with her on-field abilities, and we see Julia having a great career at UNB. She’ll contribute to our attack. She’s athletic and has pace to get herself into positions to create scoring chances for her teammates, but is a quality finisher on her own.”

“The team chemistry really appealed to me,” said Currie. “The girls and coaches were great to me and made me feel right at home from the moment I stepped on campus. UNB is a great school and I really saw it as an environment that I could thrive in. It just seems like somewhere that you’d want to be, and something that I really want to be a part of.”

A multi-sport athlete, Currie was also named the defensive MVP of the Reds girls basketball team in 2019.

She’s set goals of learning from current players and improving her game in the short-term, and winning an AUS title in the long-term.

“I bring energy to the team,” she said. “I’ll always push myself and my teammates to be the best we can be.”

“She came to our Prospects Camp last summer and we had the opportunity to get to know her on and off the field a bit more,” said Crossland. “With a large number of graduates, we’re excited to see how Julia will impact our group, and to help her continue to develop over the next 4 or 5 years.”

Currie will pursue a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry while attending UNB.
