(WOLFVILLE, NS) The Acadia Axewomen remain undefeated and in sole possession of first place in the Atlantic University Sport standings after a 2-1 win over the visiting UNB Reds.
The Axewomen kept the Reds busy in the first half, firing seven shots and keeping the Reds scoreless. At the 29-minute mark, Jenna Howell (Dartmouth, NS) scored her first goal of the season, giving the Axewomen a 1-0 lead.
Tensions grew between the two teams, and at the 30 minute mark, the Reds received a yellow card for a shove against an Axewoman.
Frustrated by the play, the Axewomen retaliated by quickly sending the ball up the field and adding their second goal a minute later, courtesy of Alexandra Scovil (Hubley, NS). Wet conditions made the top-corner shot hard to handle, and the ball deflected off the keeper's hand and trickled into the net.
The Reds had an excellent chance in the 70th minute, but Acadia keeper Sarah Charnock (Newmarket, ON) made a diving save to keep the score 2-0.
The game took a different tone after the Reds pulled within one at the 76 minute mark.
Clarisse Ramirez (Ottawa, ON) did not hesitate on a cross pass that left her with a wide-open net. The Axewomen were suddenly no longer in a secure position.
UNB continued their aggressive play in the last 10 minutes, coming close to a tying goal on several occasions, though their efforts would not be enough, and they would have to accept their 2-1 loss.
The Axewomen improve to 7-0-1 and travel to Moncton for a 2:00pm start on Sunday.
The Reds will face the Saint Mary's Huskies on Sunday.
