V-Reds Secure Services Of Goertz
UNB's Saskatoon connection delivers... again.
(FREDERICTON, NB) Madison Goertz is trading the Prairies for the Maritimes.
The Saskatoon native has signed a U SPORTS Letter of Intent and will join the UNB Varsity Reds women’s soccer team, beginning in the 2018 season.
“I chose UNB because I wanted to experience a new environment,” said the 17-year-old who describes herself as a universal player, but prefers the wing or fullback positions. “Atlantic University Sport is highly competitive and the school has a beautiful campus.”
Goertz joins a growing list of Saskatoon-bred players to choose the Varsity Reds.
Lauren Cubbon was a 2nd Team AUS All-Star in 2016, and current Varsity Reds keeper Brynn Nash began her UNB career in 2017, posting a 1-2 record in three starts.
“We’re really excited to have Madison join us,” said Varsity Reds head coach Jon Crossland. “She’s a mature young woman that has a strong desire to continue to grow her game in all facets. Madison has great game-sense, and her ability to distribute the ball but also go one-on-one will make our team more dangerous in possession.”
Goertz is currently working in the Saskatchewan Soccer Association’s High Performance Development Centre, in Saskatoon, where she’s being coached by Varsity Reds soccer and UNB Kinesiology alum Terrol Russell. Goertz is also working in Saskatoon’s Regional Excel Centre.
She captained Team Saskatchewan at last summer’s Canada Games and led Saskatoon’s St. Joseph’s High School to city and provincial championships in her Grade 12 season.
Previously, she’s been on teams that have competed at the 2015 Western Canada Summer Games and the 2013 and 2014 U-14 national championships.
“I love engaging opponents one on one, in order to get past lines,” said Goertz. “I will bring a positive attitude, determination and a leadership voice to support each one of my new teammates.”
Goertz plans on pursuing a Bachelor of Arts and Science Degree and has an eye on an Education Degree.
