(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds, on the strength of two first half goals, beat the Universite de Moncton Aigles Bleues 2-1.
Clarisse Ramirez(Ottawa, ON) scored in the 36th minute and Rachael Burton(Halifax, NS) added another in the 45th minute for UNB.
Moncton's Catherine Dupuis(St-Mathias, QC) scored for Moncton.
UNB fullback Emily Burton(Halifax, NS) was named the Subway Player of the Game.
"It feels amazing," said Burton, of the win. "We've worked our butts off and we've trained hard and we're deserving of what we're getting. We're putting in the work and we're bringing it to the field and it's working."
Ramirez opened the scoring late in the first half with a shot from about 25-yards out that beat Moncton netminder Dominique LeBlanc(Dieppe, NB).
"I have been waiting for her to put the ball in the back of the net," said Burton. "She beats players and then she usually gives the ball up for somebody else to score, so I'm happy she finally put it in the net herself."
Rachael Burton's goal, her first as a Varsity Red, came off a header, off a corner kick, just before the whistle to end the half.
Dupuis brought Moncton to within a goal seven minutes into the second, on a long strike that eluded Rebecca Duda(Halifax, NS) in the V-Reds net.
"We wanted to come into the second half very strong and when we scored, at the start, it was a good start."
UNB, 3-4-3, is now tied for fifth place, with Moncton, 4-5-0, in the Atlantic University Sport standings.
Les Aigles Bleues return home and will host Saint Mary's on Sunday.
The Varsity Reds play their final home game of the season on Saturday, when they face the Huskies in a 3:00pm kick-off.
