(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds scored early, but the UPEI Panthers scored often on their way to a 3-1 win Sunday at UNB's BMO Centre.
UNB's Abby Sullivan(Orleans, MA) scored the opening goal of the game in the first minute of play, after she was awarded a penalty kick.
The Varsity Reds tried to build on the momentum, but the Panthers defence stood its ground.
"We were above them at that point," said Varsity Reds midfielder Nicola Small(Vancouver, BC). "We were first to the ball, we were getting to the net, and then little slips caught us."
The Panthers tied the game 1-1 on a goal by Sarah MacVarish(Stratford, PE) in the 21st minute.
UPEI took the lead in the 77th minute when Jennifer Balderston(Cornwall, ON) scored her first of two. She'd add another in the 86th minute.
"Andrea(Mahoney) gave it to me at the top of the box and I looked up and had my shot and it just went under the bar," said Balderston, of her second goal.
"We were going for a six point weekend, so we're pretty happy with this. We were trying to keep our winning streak going," she said.
"They were up when we were down," said Small. "Throughout the game we dominated, we had more opportunities than other games, we played with the ball more, we played forward, we went to the net, we just couldn't finish."
The Panthers, now 3-2-1, next see action on Friday, at Saint Mary's.
The Varsity Reds, who fall to 0-4-1, go to St. John's for a pair of games against Memorial, next Saturday and Sunday.
