Cubbon Scores Four For VReds
UNB blanks SMU 4-0
(HALIFAX, NS) Lauren Cubbon(Saskatoon, SK) scored all four goals to lead the UNB Varsity Reds in a 4-0 win over the Saint Mary's Huskies, Saturday, in Halifax.
Cubbon scored in the 25th, 57th, 59th and 89th minute, and was named the Subway Player of the Game.
"Everyone was working hard on and off the ball," said Cubbon. "That's why we were able to get the three points in the end."
As for her offensive outburst, Cubbon was optimistic it was a sign of things to come.
"It's a crazy feeling, being able to accomplish all of that in just one game," said the fourth year player. "I'm hoping it continues from here on out."
Cubbon was also quick to credit her teammates.
"I think a big reason for the success I had today was the effort that everyone around me put in," she said. "It makes putting the ball in the back of the net a little easier."
With the win, the Varsity Reds are now 3-2-2.
"She did a great job," said Varsity Reds head coach Jon Crossland, of Cubbon. "Lauren and her front line group put the Huskies under pressure early, which led to chances offensively."
Up 1-0 at the half, the Varsity Reds, led by Cubbon, exploded in the second.
"We challenged them at half time to raise their competition level," said Crossland. "We wanted them to win battles and execute at a level they are capable of, and we saw that in the second half."
The Huskies are still looking for their first point of the season, and sport an 0-6-0 record.
UNB outshot the Huskies 17-3.
Varsity Reds keeper Sami Jo Bell(East Dover, NS) posted her second straight clean sheet.
UNB is now off until October 15th, when they host the Atlantic University Sport leading Cape Breton University Capers.
