Varsity Reds Suffer First Loss
(FREDERICTON, NB) The UNB Varsity Reds suffered their first loss of the Atlantic University Sport season, falling 1-0 to the Memorial Seahawks, in the second of two matches this weekend at BMO Centre.
After a scoreless game on Saturday, both teams came out strong in Sunday’s first half, producing a handful of scoring opportunities. UNB had a multitude of corner kicks, but could not find the back of the net. Both goalkeepers managed to keep the opposition at bay.
The Varsity Reds came out hard in the second half with a great chance on goal in the first minute and a free kick on top of the Seahawks 18-yard box, in the second minute. They were denied both times.
In the 70th minute of the match, UNB’s Courtney Strba (Windsor Junction, NS) created a great chance and had the goalie beaten, but a MUN defender tracked back and saved the well placed shot.
The Seahawks’ Jessie Noseworthy (St. John’s, NL) ended almost 180 minutes of scoreless soccer between UNB and MUN. She scored off of a corner kick that bounced off her shin and in.
The Subway Player of the Game for UNB was Hayley Gates (Bridgewater, NS). For MUN, it was Claire Skanes (St. Johns, NL).
UNB will travel to play UdeM on Friday, October 23rd at 5PM. MUN travels to Antigonish to play St. FX on October 24th at 6PM.
