A goal late in the game earns Varsity Reds victory over Sea-Hawks

(ST. JOHN'S, NL) A goal by Laura McNicholas with just minutes left in the game led the visiting UNB Varsity Reds to a 1-0 victory over the Memorial Sea-Hawks in AUS women's soccer on Saturday afternoon at King George the Vth Park.

After a scoreless opening half, McNicholas put the Varsity Reds ahead with her first goal of the season in the 87th minute. The third year full back scored the winning goal unassisted. McNicolas was also named the AUS Subway Player of the Game.

Memorial had a total of six shots on goal, with the Varsity Reds trailing at four. Mid-fielder Hannah Rivkin and forward Jessie Noseworthy both led the home team with three shots respectively, two of which made the net for both.

The Sea-Hawks faced a similar struggle to past years with playing their first game within days of the school year starting. Unlike UNB who had already played four exhibition games, many of the Memorial's team had not played together before Saturday.

The women meet again, Sunday, Sept. 7th at 11am.
